Using a VPN on the connection you trade from
Your broker login, card details and identity documents travel over whatever network you are on. An encrypted connection is basic hygiene — here is how to set it up and what it does not do.
Why it matters
Hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi are shared networks. Anyone on them with cheap tools can watch unencrypted traffic and, on badly configured networks, interfere with encrypted sessions. Broker platforms use TLS, but your DNS lookups, MT5 server connection metadata and the odd non-HTTPS page are still visible. A VPN wraps everything in one encrypted tunnel.
What we use
We use and recommend Kaspersky VPN Secure Connection: kill switch (cuts internet if the tunnel drops so nothing leaks), split tunnelling (route MT5 and the broker through the VPN, leave streaming out), fast servers, no-log policy. It is not available for download in some countries — including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan and China — where any reputable alternative with a kill switch (Proton VPN, Mullvad, NordVPN) does the same job.
Setup in five minutes
- Install from the vendor's site or official app store — never from a link in a chat.
- Turn on the kill switch. This is the setting that matters most.
- Pick a server close to you for speed. Distance adds latency; for trading, a nearby server is better than a 'fast' one across the world.
- Enable auto-connect on untrusted networks so you never forget on the road.
- On mobile, allow the VPN to run in the background so MT5 stays inside the tunnel.
What a VPN does not do
It encrypts your connection. It does not change who you are or where you live, and brokers do not verify you by IP address — they verify you by documents. Register with your real country of residence. An account opened with details that do not match your ID is frozen at the first withdrawal request, with your money inside. If a broker does not accept your country, choose a partner that does; the comparison page lists them.
